The effect of the expressive arts therapy program using traditional play on sociality and self expression of children with ADHD

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of expressive arts therapy program using traditional play on sociality and self expression of ADHD children. Objects of the study were six lower grade children in elementary schools, who were diagnosed as ADHD by medical specialists in mental health, experiencing severe conflicts among the same age group as their assumed main problem. The study carried out the program with 60minutes a week (a session) and 20sessions in total. It measured children``s sociality, self expression and attitude of respecting others, and examined their change before and after the implementation of the program. The study also categorized the process of such change revealed in the program and analyzed the contents. The findings of the study are as below. First, expressive arts therapy program using traditional play had a positive effect on the development of sociality ADHD children. Second, this therapy program had a positive effect on their self expression. As such, the study found that expressive arts therapy program using traditional play could improve sociality of ADHD children and generate positive change on their attitude of respecting others and self expression.
